Minutes of October meeting

Dorchester Court evictions

Residents asked for support in their ongoing campaign to stop evictions. Updates to follow. In the meantime read the background and link to the petition to sign and share is here

Guinness Evictions

Another longstanding AST tenant faces a court hearing next week as Guinness attempts to evict him. The protest outside made a real difference at Marian’s court hearing and we need to keep the pressure on Guinness – Come to protest outside Ola’s court hearing at 1.30pm on Wednesday the 14th of October in Lambeth County Court,  Cleaver Street Kennington Road London SE11 4DZ

Betiel setting up Facebook event.

Help Marian collect more signatures on her petition and raise awareness of what Guinness is doing, socially cleansing Brixton. She will be on a stall from 2pm to 4pm at the market in Max Roach Park on Saturday 10th October – Can you help? Email back to let us know.

Estate regeneration and newsletter.

We discussed doing a more general housing activists newsletter incorporating all the local campaigns we are involved in rather than just focussing on the 6 Lambeth estates threatened with regeneration. All articles welcome – DEADLINE for Submissions 17th October (please let us know if you want to write something so we can advise on word counts etc)

Articles agreed – Marian on Guinness, M on Dorchester Court, Jack on regeneration, Tom on rent rises and tax dodging landlords (propose private tenants who are asked to pay rent in cash should report their landlords to HMRC for possible tax evasion)

Grace on possible stock transfer of PACCA estate

Conference proposal

Segen reported Big Local want to support LHA and other activist groups working in central Brixton area. Proposal that Segen set up a meeting with the Big Local and Grace/Diane/Tom to talk about funding and support for organising a major conference on Gentrification/social exclusion/regeneration in Brixton.

Aim would be to have sessions for campaigners as well as sessions with leading councillors/MPs to debate them and hold them accountable.

We will have a separate meeting to organise – Sunday 18th of October 4pm in the Art Nouveau Café.

Anyone who would like to participate please email ahead so we know who/what groups are going to be represented
