Loophole in Bedroom Tax

The government recently admitted there is a big loophole in the Bedroom Tax. Simply, if you have been living at the same address since 1996 AND have been on housing benefit all that time, you are not due to pay the Bedroom Tax! Better still, you are entitled to a return of any payments that you have made and maybe compensation if you had to move to avoid it. The government reckon 3,000 to 5,000 are affected. Others say that between 40,000 and 60,000 are involved. If that is true, it may well spell the end of this terrible tax.

It is very important to apply NOW for your refund. Even if you are not sure that you are eligible it can’t hurt. Make sure to apply before March because the government is going to change the regulations to cover this point.

You can get a claim form from your landlord, or download one here. If you need help call 07834 828292.

It’s also possible to appeal room use, it’s basically impossible to define what is or is not a bedroom. Hands Off Our Homes in Leeds have produced a fact sheet you can download here

SHOCKING: About two thirds of the people hit by the Bedroom Tax are disabled. In many cases, their homes are specially adapted for them so it would be crazy to move. And in many other cases, they are simply too ill to arrange a move. So they end up paying, just to get a quiet life.
